Majority of Kiwis Believe Current Tax System Unfair: Survey

tax-systemA new online survey by ShapeNZ shows that many Kiwis are of the belief that the current tax system is unfair. But they are also equally adamant that they do have no intentions to pay more in GST to fix the system.

The survey has found that 56% out of the 750 people taking part in the survey are opposed to raising GST to 15% if income taxes were lowered at the same time.

In the survey, commissioned by the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development, 41% percent strongly opposed an increase and 15% "somewhat" opposed it.

20% somewhat supported an increase while only 13% strongly supported. 11%, according to the survey, were unsure or did not know.

The survey was carried out to get feedback from the public after a recommendation from a tax working group about making reforms of the tax system, including a land tax, raising GST and lowering company and top personal tax rates.

Signaling last week that the Government would lift GST to 15 per cent and match it with across-the-board tax cuts, Prime Minister John Key ruled out the possibility of a land tax.
