Agriculture Minister David Carter plans to sweep existing wool industry organizations seeking to form a new single body.
The task force posted in its 24-page report that a potential future still exists for coarse wools, which made up most of the nation's clip, as elite consumers demanded products that meet new standards in sustainability, ethical production, social responsibility and environmentally-sound production.
After the release of the report, wool sector leaders gathered at Premier House in Wellington with Mr. Carter and approved to adopt the eight recommendations of the report – Restoring Profitability to the Strong Wool Sector.
Yesterday, Mr. Carter told NBR, “There was robust discussion at the meeting but everyone agreed that this was a vital first step in ensuring the future of the strong wool sector”.
The task force claimed that wool farmers, merchants, scourers, exporters, spinners, tufters, weavers, wholesalers and retailers could take it as a possible route to grab a target of lifting demand for New Zealand wool.
Mr. Carter said he would now seek an independent convenor to begin the task of unifying the industry.
