Johnson & Johnson's newly found drug, Abiraterone can extend help to those suffering from prostate cancer.
Discovered by scientists and funded by Cancer Research UK working at the Institute for Cancer Research at London's Royal Marsden Hospital, the drug has shown positive results in men who did not receive chemotherapy.
"Docetaxel is an important drug but it extends life for an average of just two to three months, so there is a desperate need to improve treatment options for late-stage prostate cancer patients", said Chief Investigator Dr. Johann de Bono of Britain's Institute of Cancer Research and Royal Marsden Hospital.
Abiraterone helped stabilize men's tumors for about six months, which was remarkable. This great discovery is also believed to provide relief from pain in many patients.
Journal of Clinical Oncology reported the results on Tuesday.
More research is being done on this drug. And if things go right, the drug could be given to patients in the advanced stages of the disease as early as next year, adding some valuable months to their lives.
Prostate Cancer is Britain's most common cancer among men and the second highest killer, after lung cancer. In a year, around 35,000 people are diagnosed with it and 12,000 die.
This wonder pill might hit the market by next year.
