There will be an expanded use of a veterinary drug developed and manufactured in Kalamazoo County if it gets approved by government regulators this week.
According to the U. S. Food and Drug Administration Pfizer Inc.’s Excede antibiotic could help in bringing relief to horses with respiratory infections. This drug was previously approved for being used in swine and cattle.
Dr Thomas Lenz, senior director of Pfizer’s Equine Veterinary Services said, “Excede has been used by veterinarians for many years with great success in cattle and swine. Pfizer Animal Health is excited to be able to offer this safe and effective antibiotic for treatment in horses in just two doses for a full course of therapy.”
According to market research done by Pfizer Animal Health, it was seen that about 25 per cent of horse owners could not administer the full course of traditional oral or antibiotics given by injection. The company stated that Excede’s two doses, injected four days apart by a veterinarian, were sufficient for treatment.
Pfizer Animal Health stated that $300 million was being invested every yaer for animal health product research and development.
