Ticket prices for some buses, trains and some transmit services under Auckland's public transport will rise by 10c per journey applied from today. More alterations are expected as stated by Hunter from the Auckland Regional Transport Authority. This elevation comprises of 6% increase in train fares and 3% for the bus fares.
Operating costs are being held responsible for the rise, whereas ARTA (Auckland Regional Transport Authority) asserts that recent industrial action by bus drivers is not a reason for the hike. The amendments include single-stage ride on an Auckland bus from $1.60 to $1.70, single-stage on a train will increase from $1.40 to $1.50.
Chief Executive of the Newmarket Business Association, Cameron Brewer opined, "The old saying as cheap as chips doesn't even apply to public transport in Auckland, because a single-stage ride on a bus or train is actually cheaper than even the smallest packet of chips. For $1.70 you can circumnavigate Auckland's central suburbs on a state-of-the-art Link bus. Commuters should remember just how much the taxpayer subsidizes in public transport. Providing public transport in Auckland is an expensive exercise when you consider we're one of the world's most thinly spread suburban areas".
