Hundreds of cruise passengers diseased by a virus called norovirus on their sail through the Caribbean are finally getting back on solid American ground.
The Celebrity Mercury arrived in Charleston early Friday, and passengers began disembarking around 7 a. m.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spokesman Jay Dempsey posted that the tests confirmed the norovirus outbreak, which caused intestinal ailments for passengers and crew.
Celebrity Cruise spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez revealed that 413 of the more than 2,600 passengers and crew complained of upset stomachs, vomiting or diarrhea sometime during the 11-day voyage.
The vessel will be completely cleaned before leaving on another cruise later on Friday with 1,900 passengers.
Passenger Marge Ritter of Myrtle Beach says she was sick for about 24 hours but praised the crew for taking steps to keep the virus from spreading further.
