58-yr-old women approach clinic for IVF

58-yr-old women approach clinic for IVFA UK fertility clinic confirmed that two women who were 58 years of age came to the clinic seeking IVF. If their request is granted then they would be the oldest mothers to give birth following treatment in the UK.

The London Women's Clinic confirmed that it gave consultation to the two women but said that it was very early to say if their requests would be granted.

A month ago a 59-year-oldwoman wanted to have treatment at the same Harley Street clinic and had provoked debate over the ethics of helping women aged over 50 become pregnant.

Reports state that through oversees IVF treatment, British women aged up to 66 have given birth.

But if this becomes a reality then the two women would be the oldest to give birth following IVF in the UK.

Dr Kamal Ahuja, head of fertility at the London Women's Clinic, confirmed the approach by the women.

Ahuja added, "They have approached us and we are talking to them. But we haven't decided yet whether to go forward with treatment or not. They are not prevented from coming to talk to us - there is no upper age limit in the UK.”

According to the specialist anyone over 50 seeking treatment would have to take approval by the centre's Clinical Governance Committee.
