In what The New York Times report has described as the “first major fracture between television show owners and the wildly popular video Web site,” Viacom is pulling two of its shows – ‘The Daily Show’ and ‘The Colbert Report’ – from Hulu, the increasingly popular online TV destination site.
Confirming the discontinuation of the two shows from partner Viacom, Hulu said in a Tuesday statement that the shows will be removed from the site at the end of the day on March 9; while they will be available back on ComedyCentral. com.
Along with the availability of full episodes and short clips of the pulled out shows on the Comedy Central site; the content will also be independently available on thedailyshow. com and colbertnation. com.
The pull out of popular content by Viacom, after having made them available for almost two years, will spell inconvenience for all those Hulu users who had depended on the service’s subscription tools and up-to-the-minute episode notifications.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the transition to ComedyCentral. com would be a rather difficult move for users and bloggers who have thus far experienced the convenience of using Hulu as a way to source clips for context – chiefly because while Hulu’s video-embedding technology enables users to single out particular parts of shows for sharing on the Web; the option is fairly limited on Comedy Central.
