Apple to crack down on “cookie-cutter” apps in the App Store

appleClose on the heels of its last-month decision to remove almost all applications with “sexy” content from the App Store, Apple is reportedly initiated a new move to crack down on the so-called “cookie-cutter” apps – thousands of those “same-same” apps that are usually created from a standard template; and largely ‘look, feel and act’ the same, sans any “extended features.”

The latest Apple decision likely stems from the fact that there are already tons of “cookie-cutter” iPhone apps that consume valuable real estate in the App Store – these “same-same” apps are essentially built from templates using one of the several app-building services available.

With Apple apparently trying to remove all the “junk” from its App Store, future and current developers of iPhone apps would now have to give a much deeper thought to the kind of apps that they are creating.

Since Apple probably wants to do away with those apps that hardly accomplish anything more than what a regular widget does, the company has decided to reach out to app developers like Appmakr, to observe the type of applications they can build.

In short, the ‘survival’ strategy for developers at the App Store will largely include – investment in building out substantially greater flexibility to achieve a cut above the rest; integration of additional features into the apps; and superior design and UI elements.
