Yesterday at the Cancer Society Memorial Garden on the Taylor River Reserve, for remembering those who took part in last year's Relay for Life, a ceremony was conducted.
A sculpture donated to the garden by Tuamarina sculptor Iosefa Leo was recognized officially at the ceremony.
The sculpture was started when his wife Jenny Doole-Leo was diagnosed with cancer.
The ashes of the 600 to 700 candle bags were scattered on the garden by people who attended the ceremony. Last March, the candle bags were used as a vigil in remembrance of lost loved ones at the relay.
Cancer Society Marlborough Centre manager Margot Wilson said, “The sculpture was in memory of the late Doole-Leo and all those who took part in or supported the Relay For Life in 2009. We were acknowledging the love that went into creating the candle bags.”
The ceremony was attended by Pam Hamilton with Pauline and Gary Graham and Kay Ayson, who were part of the Charlie's Angels relay team.
The Charlie's Angels were a part of the last two relays. The first participation was in support of Hamilton, at the time he was battling cancer and participating in the relay.
