With indications galore that 3-D is likely to become the one of the main hardware upgrades in home entertainment in future, thanks to the recent success of movies like ‘Avatar;’ Sony is anticipating almost 2.5 million unit sales of its
3-D TVs this year.
According to recent information forwarded by Sony’s TV division head, Yoshihisa Ishida, to reporters in Tokyo, Sony is looking at a 67 percent increase in its TV-set sales – from 15 million during the current year to 25 million in the fiscal year ending March 2011; thereby indicating that, over the next fiscal year, Sony’s 3-D TV-set sales will comprise nearly 10 percent of its overall TV sales.
Though Sony’s rivals Samsung and Panasonic will probably commence their sales of their respective 3-D sets before Sony, the company still has enough time to catch up in the sense that there is very limited 3-D content available as of now; and ‘Avatar’ will only be released on Blu-ray DVD towards the end of this year.
Other than expecting notable sales of its 3-D sets, Sony is taking the 3-D route even in its movie-making business – with the company announcing last month that the next film in its successful ‘Spider-Man’ franchise would be in 3-D. Moreover, the company is also working out a software update for its PlayStation 3 console to enable gamers to play 3-D games.
