Spinal cord injuries more common in bikers

Spinal cord injuries more common in bikersThere are reports that state spinal cord injuries are the most among young male motorcyclists in Australia.

Australian Institute of Health and Welfare stated that about 362 cases of new spinal cord injury in 2007-08 had been reported.

A majority of these cases took place due to crashes or falls. About 77 had non-trauma causes such as pressure on the spine from a cancerous growth, infection, or damage linked to osteoarthritis.

Almost half of the trauma-related injuries happened in motor vehicle accidents and those who met with accidents were mostly young male motorbike riders.

The report stated that most accidents took place on highways and roads but there were accidents that happened at off-road bike trails, beaches and farms.

During the year, about 81 cases of spinal cord injury happened due to fall.

Royal Perth Hospital's Trauma Director Dr Sudhakar Rao says, “Most spinal injuries are caused by motor accidents and falls.”
