According to the most recent statistics released by the market research firm NPD, the February sales of the Sony PlayStation 3 increased 30 percent year-on-year - marking the second consecutive 30 percent growth for the console.
Noting that the company is witnessing "incredible demand" for the PS3, Patrick Seybold, senior director of corporate communications at Sony Computer Entertainment (SEC) said that the company is "tracking to sell
13 million PS3s worldwide by the end of March, which marks a 30 percent increase over last fiscal year."
Seybold further added that with the platform showing steady acceleration, the company is gearing itself to showcase its fairly extensive content base yet again this year, expecting it to be "one of the best years ever" for the PS3 console.
In terms of content for the PS3, breakout titles like Heavy Rain already managed a ranking in the `top ten' games list for February, that too only within around a week of its sales in the month; and the PS-3 exclusive `God of War III' is scheduled for launch this month.
Sony is certain that `God of War III' will hardly face any notable competition in its run to the top of software charts for March.
Adding that Sony is forecasting "continued momentum" for PSP and PS2, Seybold said that the company would also gain substantially from the recent unveiling of its PlayStation Move motion control system.
