A notification has been issued by The Health and Family Welfare Ministry regarding the display of the graphic images on the packs of tobacco products, with effect from June 1 of this year, on the basis of the legal amendments made in 2008. As per the rules laid down by the Government, the companies involved in the production of tobacco products will have to imprint the pictures depicting the effects of tobacco after consumption. Earlier the pictures of diseased lungs and scorpions were displayed, but now more gruesome pictures will have to be displayed on the packs.
To make the control measures more effective, the respective action has been taken. Until now, the pictures used on the packs were unable to create a strong impression upon the consumers and the addicts. The new picture of a cancerous mouth is a dreadful one, certain to make people give a second thought to their addiction.
As per the survey conducted by Voluntary Health Association of India and Healis Sanskaria Institute across eight states, it has been revealed that the pictures had a great effect on 98% people who saw the images, filling them with a sense of grave fear. Hence, it shows that the decision of printing the packages with these horrifying pictures will be able to help in curbing the addiction amongst people.
