Smokers can no more take the liberty of smoking outside cafes in Sydney’s Bondi Beach. The ban will start from July.
Smoking has been banned within an area of 10 metres of outdoor cafes in the popular tourist spot by the Waverley Council.
The restrictions however do not apply to internal courtyards or beer gardens but are applicable to council-regulated footpaths.
The Heart Foundation stated that 28 per cent of regional councils had some form of smoke-free policy in 2009 but 65 per cent of metropolitan councils had this policy.
Councillor Kerryn Sloan says the ban is designed to keep a tab on those tourists who do not follow Australia's increasingly anti-smoking attitude. She added, "They come from countries that have smoking still socially acceptable. They'll often sit down and grab a cup of coffee, have a bit of a chain smoke and move on. The same goes for people who smoke who are actually locals. They tend to use it as a smoking area not an eating area."
Playgrounds and parks would also come in the restricted area from July.
