"BrainPort device" is a technology developed in US, which is making the world visible to the ones who lose their sight due to some accidental incidents. The same technology has made the dark-dependent world come alive and independent to a British soldier who completely lost his sight after a grenade attack in Iraq, as he is now able to sense the visuals with his tongue. The soldier admits that his world has been transformed because of the technology.
This makes use of a video camera attached to sunglasses, in turn connected to a plastic lollipop that reads the pulses generated. The technology works by representing the strong stimulus with white pixels from the camera, black pixels for no stimulation and grey pixels for medium levels. Using this device requires a lot of training and practices.
Not only the visuals, but Craig Lundberg is now capable of reading words, making shapes and walking without any support. Lundberg got an access to this technology after he became blind while he was posted in Basra in 2007, following which he was left completely dependent on a guide dog.
The Ministry of Defense chose him the first one to experiment the BrainPort device on, which signals the tongue with different "tingling" sensations which are a result of the electric pulses which convert the images into senses. Every sensation has a different intensity and helps the users interpret for visually sensing their surroundings.
The Ministry of Defense (MoD) predicts the cost of allotting and training for the device to be around £18,000.
