Cyclone Hit Snaps Off Power Supply in Queensland

CycloneCyclone Ului caused extensive smash up to power communications when it passed the coast near Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays early today, with winds of 200km/h and smashing a dozen boats on top of the rocks.

The cyclone disrupted power lines of 55,000 homes in north Queensland. Even businesses continued to be without power. The region from Bowen to Proserpine, Mackay, parts of the Whitsundays Islands and west to Collinsville suffered power infrastructure harm.

Ergon spokesperson, John Fowler said, once a damage evaluation had been made, the company would know how much fund should be directed towards the repairs. In the meantime, additional crews were asked to come in from surrounding districts, to assist in the reinstallation of power.

The damages to power infrastructure seem to be severe in Mackay.

Fowler stated that, first, restoration of power to essential facilities and services would be completed. These comprise of serious community infrastructures such as hospitals, police, ambulance, fire brigade, water treatment facilities and pumping stations. Chief commercial sectors, such as shopping centers will then have their power restored.
