As the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is phasing out irrigated wheat production, in order to save water, a high level delegation from the kingdom, is planning to tour Western Australia this week for improving wheat imports.
It’s said that Western Australia could now have an opportunity to supply major amount of wheat to Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia’s sole wheat importer, the Grain Silos and Flour Mills Organization were invited on an inspection trip by Terry Redman, Agriculture and Food Minister from WA Department of Agriculture.
According to Mr. Redman WA could become the main supplier of wheat to Saudi Arabia.
"Saudi Arabia is focusing on its water security and phasing out irrigated wheat production,” he said.
Mr. Redman added, "Instead, the kingdom will rely more on imported wheat to satisfy an estimated annual demand for 2.5 million tonnes. Their total demand for all grains will be six million tonnes".
He also said that the WA department and the federal government's Grains Research and Development Corporation were studying Saudi Arabia’s bread-making and other banking requirements.
The WA Wheat supply chain, as well as grain handling operations, ports, processors, and a bakery will be inspected by the delegation.
