With the health care reform on its way, about 32 million new patients will look for primary care doctors.
Which will be difficult as already there is a shortage of primary care doctors and about 13,000 more will be needed to handle those eligible for insurance.
About 312,000 primary care doctors are currently practicing in the United States, American Medical Association said. This includes general practice (GP), family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics.
A study done by the Robert Graham Center for Policy Studies in Family Medicine and Primary Care in partnership with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality estimated the number of doctors needed.
Sixty five million Americans don't have enough primary care doctors because of the areas they live in.
There are some incentives in the new legislation for entering into primary care. The new incentives are a good start but to increase our supply of primary care doctors more is needed to be done.
