Close the Gap 2010 in Moree today

Business houses and community members are being encouraged to attend Close the Gap 2010 that is held in Moree today.

Angela Guan, Pius X Aboriginal Corporation practice manager, said the aim of the program was to educate people about the gap in life expectancy between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. These people live 17 years less than other Australians.

According to Guan in the hopes that communities would support the goal of closing the gap, businesses and organisations were being made aware of the Close the Gap initiative. She said, "Close the Gap looks at how we can all work together and recognise that health is so important. The community needs to be more proactive about their health." Noeline Briggs-Smith, Dhiiyaan Indigenous Centre Aboriginal researcher, said support from the Moree community was needed for anything relating to educating people about indigenous health.

She added that for identifying the health issues faced by the local indigenous community she was taking several steps.
