The Microsoft mobile team recently announced via Twitter that the company’s two-months-old Windows Phone 7 Series operating system – the next Windows OS for Windows phones – has undergone a name change, with the word “Series” having been done away with!
The system, which was called the ‘Windows Mobile 6.5’ till the Mobile World Congress in March, will henceforth be known by a sleeker name – the ‘Windows Phone 7’, rather than the ‘Windows Phone 7 Series.’
The Microsoft phone team’s tweet that announced the name change for the new OS, which will likely commence selling during holidays this year, went thus: “Tis the season for Series finales. We've got one too -- dropping the ‘Series’ and keeping the 'Windows Phone 7.' Done.”
Though the tweet did not give any reason for the change in the forthcoming Windows OS’ name, David Webster - chief strategy officer in Microsoft’s central marketing group – told TechFlash that the ‘Windows Phone 7 Series’ nomenclature gave people the idea that the software was Windows Phone 7 Series, despite the fact that it was actually on an attempt to refer to the devices running Windows Phone 7.
Later, a Microsoft statement said that the new OS’ name “modification” to ‘Windows Phone 7’ has come about “simply in response to customer feedback that they want a simpler way to say and use the name consistently.”
