Better nursing home medical care needed, says GPs

Better nursing home medical care needed, says GPsDoctors and nurses of OZ have stated that close monitoring was needed for medical care delivered to Australians in aged care centers that would further improve it.

A government report showed a quarter of complaints made to the Department of Health and Ageing in 2008-09 were about the health and personal care of residents, which led to the Australian Medical Association call for a new accreditation system for nursing homes.

The key issues pointed out by them were clinical care, continence management, and the management of infectious diseases.

AMA president Andrew Pesce said, ''The AMA wants the government to introduce a formal nursing home accreditation standard on access to medical care for all nursing home residents, with proper monitoring of aged care homes against this standard.”

According to the government report, with 328 cases of confirmed wrongdoing, Victorian facilities received the most complaints and breaches.

The AMA's calls was rejected by a spokeswoman for the federal government. She said that aged care centers were already required to meet specific accreditation standards. (IANS)
