Though the Apple iPhone’s exclusive US carrier AT&T has been reiterating that meeting the iPhone users’ bandwidth demands would be a ‘tough ask’ for any carrier in the country, Verizon Wireless CEO Ivan Seidenberg said that the company was willing to be put through the test, and was interested in carrying the popular iPhone.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, though Seidenberg refrained from mentioning any timeline for a Verizon-specific iPhone, he told the Council of Foreign Relations in New York on Tuesday: “We're open to getting the device. Our network is capable of handling it.”
Addressing the conference, Seidenberg refuted the claims that wireless service is better in Europe or Asia than in the US. He said that the US is, in fact, the leading country in terms of choice, utilization, and network quality.
As regards a CDMA version of the iPhone on Verizon, there are expectations galore from the carrier, which holds the top slot in Consumer Reports’ most recent survey of wireless customer satisfaction. Furthermore, a Verizon version of the iPhone would end AT&T’s exclusivity for the smartphone.
In spite of the fact that Apple has, over the three years of its iPhone-exclusivity deal with AT&T, been resolutely defending AT&T from its countless detractors, the rumors about a Verizon iPhone indicate that Apple is apparently tired of the frequent complaints from AT&T’s iPhone customer base.
