Giving yet another turn to the ongoing drama between the dismissed Infinity Ward heads - Jason West and Vince Zampella - and their ex-employer Activision, a Monday morning announcement by Electronic Arts (EA) revealed the company’s deal with the video-games designer duo for the sole international distributorship for their newly-formed studio, Respawn Entertainment.
As a result of its partnership, game publisher EA will have exclusive worldwide distribution rights of the future titles from the studio - under its EA Partners program, which entails a cut of the sales proceeds.
By naming their studio as Respawn Entertainment, West and Zampella apparently want to send an unmistakable message - “respawn” in video game terminology refers to a slain character that comes back to life!
Going by the information forwarded by inside sources, the newly-formed studio – which will likely be based in the same area of Los Angeles as Infinity Ward - is getting its initial financing from several million dollars in seed capital by EA.
However, in a marked deviation from the unwritten rules of the highly corporatized video game world – where typical publishing deals imply that publishers pay the developers up front to profit a game’s sales revenue -, West and Zampella will own and have full control over the intellectual property created by them.
About Respawn Entertainment’s prospects, Zampella said: “This is a total reset. We're starting again from ground zero. It's daunting and exciting.”
