Risk of blood clots in prostate cancer increases

blood-clotAccording to a study conducted on 76,000 Swedish men, there are two times more chances of men suffering from prostate cancer to suffer a blood clot as compared to other men.

The study led by Mieke Van Hemelrijck, of King’s College London, stated that younger men who were undergoing hormone therapy for the disease have more tha two times chances of having a deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) and the chances of a pulmonary embolism were two times.

For reasons that are yet to be found out, having any form of cancer is associated with an increased chance of developing a clot, more likely in the legs or lungs.

Almost 50 per cent of people treated in hospital can develop a blood clot in the legs that can then move to the lungs. The risk was doubled for pulmonary embolism and 1.73 times higher for DVT For men who had received curative treatment.

Before changing treatment, the experts advise patients to consult a doctor.
