The Facebook F8 conference on Wednesday witnessed the official launch of Docs. com, also called Docs for Facebook - a new online app developed by Microsoft’s FUSE Labs; giving users the ability to create, edit, and share Microsoft Office documents with their Facebook friends.
Currently in beta, the new app – notably similar to the recently-announced Microsoft Office 2010 – presently allows the viewing of the documents; however, for creating new documents, users have to join a wait list.
The similarity of the Docs. com with Office 2010 largely results from the fact that the service is actually powered by Office 2010 - the most striking difference between the two being that Docs. com features a Facebook connection and presents added sharing opportunities.
Docs. com virtually expands its Facebook presence by offering options like – giving users the ability to add a specialized tab to their profile; to make all the user-created documents accessible in a single location; and to use an added Docs bookmark on the Facebook home page.
Describing the Docs. com service as a “social-productivity experience,” Microsoft FUSE Labs' Pat Kinsel said in the app ‘Overview’ document: “What makes Docs special is it's the only service that supports the complete document lifecycle. That coupled with seamless integration of Microsoft Office 2010 and Facebook makes Docs the best possible document service for the Facebook environment.”
