Federal Prisoners Become Easy Victims Of HIVA new report has unleashed some startling facts. The study called The Correctional Service of Canada analysis took 3,370 prisoners in federal penitentiaries as participants. It has concluded that 4.6 per cent of inmates are infected by the virus and 31 per cent agree of having HIV.

In other words, the study reports that one in 20 prisoners is infected with HIV. The results of the research stress on improved inmate education and better clean needle programs. Both the steps are very important to deal with the spread of the disease.

A major news release has pointed out HIV rate in Canada is 15 times greater in comparison to other countries and 39 per cent amounts to hepatitis C.

The federal survey which was performed in the year 2007 reveals that needles are shared among the prisoners for injecting drugs and it stresses on the possibility of sharing the needle collectively by many people, including those infected by HIV.

Greg Simmons, Prisoner's Representative for the Canadian Treatment Action Council commented that he is worried about the distribution of anti-viral drugs which do not reach the prisoner on time.

The survey disclosed that 60 percent of the HIV victims confirmed of interruptions in their treatment during imprisonment.
