Facebook unveils new features; user privacy still a ‘pesky’ issue

Facebook unveils new features; user privacy still a ‘pesky’ issueAt its recent F8 developers’ conference, popular social network Facebook unveiled a number of new features that are aimed at facilitating the users in building their Facebook profile as well as in sharing online articles and other items with their friends.

The ‘cool’ new, soon-to-be-available features include – a ‘social bar plug-in’ which boasts features like Facebook chat; the ‘like’ button for sharing real-world items like favorite sports team or movies; ‘recommendation plug-in’ that displays a box with the top likes from all Facebook users and their recommendations; ‘activity stream plug-in’ for showing all likes and recommendations on a mini-Facebook Newsfeed; and ‘instant personalization’ for searches, based on the publicly available Facebook profile information of the users.

Though the Facebook’s new plug-ins and instant personalization features will bring about a more deeply-integrated social experience for the users of the site, offering them different ways in which to interact with their friends and favorite Websites, Facebook has made no disclosure about the manner in which the information will be shared and stored across third-party Websites.

The lofty claims about the creation of a more “semantically aware” Web are actually aimed at a Facebook-ized Web – one comprehensive channel for Facebook data collection, pertaining to the users’ interests, hobbies, and buying habits.

However, in its creation of an unprecedented Web, Facebook has apparently overlooked one ‘pesky’ issue – the privacy of the users!
