NewDelhi-25AprilI.doc: According to Bloomberg reports, the Microsoft Xbox 360 gaming console may soon boast it own ‘exclusive’ television channel – with Peter Chernin, the ex-President of News Corp, and Microsoft having apparently discussed the future development of such a channel.
Going by the report, the official Xbox TV channel will be co-owned by Microsoft and Chenin, and will essentially be a subscriber-service; thereby implying that that the Xbox LIVE fees – which currently costs $50 per year – will likely be hiked by a couple of dollars monthly, so as to counterbalance the costs related to programming.
Elaborating that the select TV content would be aimed at young, male Xbox 360 gamers, the Bloomberg report further revealed that the Xbox TV channel will telecast both “reruns and original shows,” giving viewers a ‘paid’ opportunity to watch web-delivered films and TV shows.
Seeking to benefit from the new revenue stream in a budding market, Chernin is reportedly putting across various TV distribution ideas around to the interested TV and movie content producers, who are aiming for new markets – more so as the Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii gaming consoles all support the access to Netflix streaming.
Reportedly, Chernin also discussed the Xbox 360 TV show concept with late night comedian Conan O'Brien, who surprisingly sidestepped the News Corp-owned Fox Entertainment, and signed with the cable-based network TBS.
