The last year was especially lucky for the richest people in the United Kingdom. They continued to increase their net worth and the overall increase amounted to 30%. These figures were revealed in the Sunday Times Rich List.
As the world grappled with economic crisis, Britain’s richest people increased their wealth by 77% compared to last year. The total number of billionaires also increased five times to 53 from 10 last year.
Lakhsmi Mittal continued to stay at the top of the list for the sixth year in a row. His net worth doubled from £10,800 million in 2009 to £22,450 million. This was the result of continued upsurge in global steel demand.
Roman Abramovich, Chelsea’s Russian owner stayed at the second position by adding £400 million to his net worth in a year by £7,400 million.
The third place was occupied by the Duke of Westminster, who stayed as the richest British-born billionaire saw his wealth increase by £250 million to £6,750 million.
Sir Philip Green and his wife also increased their wealth from £3,830 million to £4,105 million. Even though their wealth increased they tumbled to the ninth position from sixth rank in 2009.
A new entry was witnessed in this group. Anil Agarwal, moved 60 places in the list to be the tenth richest person in Britain. He was helped by the increasing share prices of Vedanta Resources, the London based mining company. He added £3,500 million to his fortunes which is an increase of 583% over 2009.
