San Mateo police raid Gizmodo iPhone blogger Jason Chen’s house

Jason-ChenGizmodo blogger Jason Chen, the man behind the sensational scoop pertaining to the leakage of details Apple’s forthcoming iPhone, confirmed in a Monday message on the technology site that his house was raided by San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies on Friday night.

The raid, which apparently was part of the ongoing investigations into the leak of a ‘lost’ iPhone prototype, was carried out by California’s Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team in San Mateo, in the absence of Chen and his wife. The officers broke open the front door, and reportedly apprehended two dozen pieces of electronic equipment, including computers, digital cameras, and hard drives.

According to Gizmodo, the deputies had a search warrant which stated the reason behind the search as the likelihood that the property may either have been “used as a means of committing a felony” or could “show a felony has been committed.”

The warrant, which had been duly signed at 7 p. m. - only a few hours before the raid was carried out, by a San Mateo County Superior Court judge, allowed the police to search Chen’s residence as well as any vehicle in his control.

However, challenging the warrant, Jennifer Granick - Electronic Frontier Foundation’s civil liberties director – said, with reference to the federal Privacy Protection Act, that Chen, a blogger, is protected from a warrant by both state and federal laws.
