The analysts attending Research in Motion (RIM)’s annual Wireless Enterprise Symposium (WES) in Orlando, Florida, on Tuesday, got a peek at the much-awaited BlackBerry OS 6.0 version – a notably revamped operating system which addresses the BlackBerry platform’s biggest drawback, namely, the lack of a decent Web browser.
Unveiling the new BlackBerry OS – scheduled to be launched in the next quarter – at the WES, RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis said that, though integration of all of RIM’s devices with the new OS will “take time”, the company will “try and do our best to allow people to upgrade to 6.0.”
According to an email by Mackie Research Capital analyst Nick Agostino, the reaction of the WES audience to a short video clipping of the new OS, featuring a more touch-friendly display, was that of “shock and awe.”
Saying that the audience broke into applause to show its appreciation of the new RIM OS, Agostino added: “It's the first time I had seen that type of response midway through a presentation.”
Earlier in the day, RIM also announced two new versions of its existing BlackBerry handsets. Noting that both the new offerings – BlackBerry Pearl 3G and BlackBerry Bold 9650 - feature user-friendly enhancements including more powerful built-in cameras and an easier-to-navigate display, RIM’s other co-CEO Jim Balsillie said that users will witness some “very powerful extensions” from RIM in the near future.
