Major Changes Needed in California High-Speed Rail Project

high speed trainA state level audit has found that the proposed high-speed train project suffers from short sighted approach and inadequate management control. It has warned that this may lead to serious delays and possibly a breakdown of the plan to start a bullet train project in the state of California.

The results of the audit have already been submitted to California’s Legislature and Governor’s office. It seriously questions the viability of the proposed project. It also argues that the state does not have enough funds to execute the project.

Auditors also question the funding for this project. It is argued that the funding needed to execute this project has not been based on concrete evidence. It is also relying on private financing which may not materialize as it is based on profits which may not be realized.

The report is also accusing the rail authority of misusing state bond money. They only checked two project reports properly out of 22 without collecting relevant information about the completion of the project.

The audit also gave a set of 10 recommendations to the rail authority to improve the overall planning and secure more funding sources. The rail authority has already acknowledged that there are problems related to the project but they are trying to work on these.

The rail authority officials argue than any change in plans will lead to increased spending and may lead to delays in the project.
