Squatters stay put as eviction notice appealed
Glenn Hannah bought the Kaikohe building

As per the media reports, Glenn Hannah, an Australian man, who in April bought a Northland building - called the Kaikohe building - will have to wait for some time before he gets its possession.

The building, currently acquired by Maori squatters, was bought by Hannah at a mortgagee sale. But Nga Uri o Tupoto Maori occupiers claim that native title to the land overrides any other title.

They were ordered to be evicted by Judge Keith de Ridder on Friday; however, since then an appeal has been filed, and it was declared by Justice Graham Lang in High Court that until the appeal has been heard, the occupiers could not be evicted by the police.

Mr. Hannah expressed that he was facing a hard time because of the occupiers' leader Gina Craig. He said that removing them would cost a lot of money, adding, "They're just going to blow out my legal costs. I just hope they don't damage the building."

It was put forth by Senior Sergeant Justin Rogers of Kaikohe police that the occupiers could not be evicted until the court process was completed.

It should be noted that the building was already occupied and had trespass notices on it from the occupants, when it was put for sale.

A sum of $80,000 was offered by Mr. Hannah and it came as a surprise for him when it was accepted -- considering its GV was five times more.
