After a recent raise in tobacco product prices, a dairy was robbed by four masked men at gunpoint. It took place in the suburb of Highbury around 8:00 pm last night. The faces of the robbers were covered with hoods and they threatened the owners along with an elderly customer.
The robbers also took away the cash register and a large quantity of tobacco products. A Police Detective stressed that the robbers could not have more than a few hundred dollars in cash and tobacco. Police are yet to recover the firearm used in the robbery.
It is being speculated that the criminals were in their mid-to-late teens. The police are still reviewing the footage from the security camera. The Association of Community Retailers (ACR) today argued that the robbery is due to the sudden increase in tobacco prices announced by the Government last week.
Another proposal to make tobacco displays illegal would make things more troublesome for the tobacco retailers, argued retailers across the country. The Government's policies have come for widespread criticism from retailing industry due to these incidents.
Many argue that it is much easier to rob convenience stores for criminals as they can get cash and tobacco without much risk from these stores. The Government is being told to review its policies after a recent upsurge in the robberies of these stores.
