RealNetworks launches social-game platform – “GameHouse Fusion”

GameHouse FusionWith the popularity of interactive gaming notably on the increase, RealNetworks Inc. – which is widely known for its audio- and video-streaming technologies – officially launched its “GameHouse Fusion” platform at this week’s Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco.

Elaborating that “GameHouse Fusion” is designed to work on a wide array of gaming sites and services, RealNetworks said that the new platform is backed by media and technology companies like Comcast, News Corp.’s MySpace, Mattel, and Qualcomm.

The new platform will essentially facilitate developers in building social features into their games, enabling users of social-networks like Facebook and MySpace to track scores, create tournaments and award virtual prizes.

Over and above the social-profile aspect, RealNetworks will also offer developers a convenient way for having their creations ported to other platforms, sans any additional effort.

When developers submit their games via Fusion’s software development kit (SDK), the games are then readied for deployment elsewhere, with the help of GameHouse’s “Emerge” technology. The technology virtually takes Flash games and ports them over to Java/BREW.

While “GameHouse Fusion” can already be found in the Web version of UNO built by GameHouse – a 2004-acquired company that is an independent branch of the RealNetworks business -; it has not yet been made available to any of the older developers.
