The patent infringement battle is apparently full on between Nokia and Apple – with the Finland-based cellphone bigwig filing yet another complaint against Cupertino. The new complaint, which further extends Nokia’s already filed patent infringement lawsuit against Apple, largely pertains to Apple’s touchscreen iPad tablet computer.
The latest Nokia complaint – the fifth ‘smartphone technology related’ patent complaint between Nokia and Apple in the past one year - is aimed at the 3G iPad version that can connect to the Web using cellphone networks.
According to the information forwarded by a Nokia spokeswoman Laurie Armstrong, the five patents mentioned in the complaint – filed in United States District Court in Madison, Wisconsin - relate to enhanced speech and data transmission, and antenna configurations which enhance performance as well as save space.
Further, noting that the patents involved in the latest complaint are different from the ones at issue in earlier lawsuits, Paul Melin - Nokia’s general manager of patent licensing - said: “Nokia has been the leading developer of many key technologies in mobile devices. We have taken this step to protect the results of our pioneering development and to put an end to continued unlawful use of Nokia’s innovation.”
Nokia has specified in the complaint that the Apple-branded wireless communication devices largely exploit Nokia’s decades’ long endeavors and investments undertaken for continued investments advancing cellular communications and giving the Nokia handsets a leading edge against its smartphone market rivals.
