The concession on beef, chicken and lamb chops in April have moderately led to a decrease of food prices by half a percent. Due to the lower prices of beef, down 4.5%; the meat, poultry, and fish subgroup have dwindled by
2.6%; fresh chicken, down by 4.7%; and the lamb chops, down by 9%.
The discounting has had an immense influence on the above stated falls. Chris Pike, Statistics NZ's Prices Manager, said, "Although food prices are now 0.4 percent higher than a year ago, they are 8.1 percent higher than two years ago”.
With Kiwifruit prices falling 36.4%, the prices of other fruits and vegetables have declined by 1.7%. The lower prices for broccoli, down 15.1%, and potatoes, down 4.8% have also been considerable contributors for these descend.
A 0.7% augment in the prices of grocery food has also led to the lower prices for meat, poultry and fish, and for fruit and vegetables. The victuals prices in the month of April have climbed to 0.4%, accounting a 2.3% rise in groceries; 1.9% trudge in restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food; and a 2.7% hike in non-alcoholic beverages.
With 5% down for the fruit and vegetable subgroup and 2.2% down for the fish, the prices have plummeted down in the year to April 2010.
