With the quarterly results of computer giant Hewlett-Packard (HP) beating expectations, the company has raised its full-year earnings outlook pertaining to demand for personal computers and servers; and a revival in its printing business.
On Tuesday, HP reported a notable 8 percent increase in its fiscal second-quarter revenue from its printing division – marking a twofold growth over the unit’s first quarter revenue. Meanwhile, higher-margin revenue from printing supplies rose from 1 percent to 6 percent.
The company has also reported that its fiscal second-quarter profit increased 28 percent on higher world-wide sales and profit growth in its core PC business, which saw a jump in shipments.
Highlighting HP’s broad-based growth in the latest quarter, the company’s CEO Mark Hurd said on Tuesday that he visualizes “outstanding opportunities” in terms of the company’s growth and margin expansion.
Further expressing evident confidence in HP’s key services unit - bolstered by the company’s 2008-acquisition of Electronic Data Systems –, Hurd said that a “major opportunity” to propel revenue for the unit will result from the company’s attempts to automate the business and improve strategies.
Saying that HP feels “very good” about the position of its business, Hurd added: “We have seen very strong improvement in our pipeline and you know we exited the year with very strong signings. We expect to have a very strong signings year this year.”
