The news of Google Android handsets outselling the iPhone, was a burning issues a few days back, but according to the new figures, it has also overtaken Windows Mobile. The figures reveal that the sales of mobile phones that running Google's Android operating system have surpassed the mobile devices that are running Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system.
About 10 per cent of all smartphones sold worldwide in the first quarter of this year were Android-based handsets, according to research firm Gartner. This shows a huge increase on the 1.6 per cent market share, which it enjoyed at the same period last year. Windows Mobile devices are responsible for 6.8 per cent of all handset sales in the same period, which is decreased from 10.2 per cent in the first quarter of last year.
NPD Group, one more analyst firm, reported that in North America, the Android-based phones accounted for 28 per cent of all smart phone sales, as compared to the 21 per cent market share of Apple iPhone's. Though, Research in Motion's BlackBerry devices continued to dominate with 36 per cent share of the US smartphone market. Android's dramatic rise over the last year has been highlighted with this data. Eric Schmidt, Google's Chief Executive, revealed that about 60,000 Android devices were being shipped every day.
