According to the recent reports, Mayor Dave Bronconnier has accused the city auditor of showing callousness with the statements that raised the apprehensions about a possibility of fraud at city hall.
Defending the city hall staff, Bronconnier said, “I think it was cavalier. The audit report does not, anywhere in the report, suggest any wrongdoing by city staff ".
Reports claim that auditor Tracy McTaggart told the audit committee that her office was investigating allegations of fraud about the awarding of city contracts.
She further claimed that, the investigations were started following the tips that came through the whistleblower program.
She emphasized that though the audit on the city's procurement policy did discover fraud, however, the total number of employees and amount of purchasing done, clearly points at some procurement and fraud at city hall.
According to the findings of the audit, it was discovered that many contracts were awarded without any competition and the value of contracts were often increased than the original.
However, she could not furnish any details about the allegations or the investigations that were followed into them.
Commenting on the incident, Ald. Brian Pincott, Chairman of the Audit Committee said, "It was an incredibly sweeping statement. The audit found no allegations of fraud".
