Google begins the roll out of Android 2.2 ‘Froyo’ to Nexus One handsets

Google begins the roll out of Android 2.2 ‘Froyo’ to Nexus One handsetsWith Google having touted at its recent I/O conference that some of the Android-based handsets will, before long, get a ‘Froyo’ – the Android 2.2 version - update, an email from the company has revealed that the roll out of Froyo to Nexus One handsets has already begun.

In addition, the Froyo update for the other HTC phones and Motorola Droid handset is also on the cards; with Android SDK Tech Lead, Xavier Ducrohet, specifying in a blog post: “Android 2.2 will be here soon, and some devices will get the update in the coming weeks.”

Meanwhile, some bloggers are also posting the steps involved in the manual installation of Android Froyo on certain handheld devices. The manual-installation process apparently does not work with AT&T-based or Sprint phones at present, and involves a notable number of custom modifications.

Noting that the fast-performing Froyo boasts features like Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities, 3G tethering and first-ever support for Flash 10.1; Ducrohet elucidated that the new version is also equipped with latest data backup APIs that not only allow the participation of the apps in data backup and restore, but also enables the restoration of an app’s last data when installed on a fresh or a reset device.

Ducrohet further wrote that Froyo will allow developers to declare whether their app should be installed on the handsets internal memory or an SD card.
