PC bigwig Dell is all set to mark its foray into the tablet computer arena with its 5-inch `Streak' tablet, also called Mini 5. Though the tablet was first displayed at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, not many details had thus far been disclosed by the company.
Smaller than other tablets, the touchscreen Streak, running the Google Android operating system, features a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and 2 GB of built-in storage, with the option of additional support for up to 32 GB.
To be released initially across Europe, and subsequently in the US, the Streak's debut model will feature 16GB storage; GPS; Bluetooth support; 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity; as well as two cameras - one on the front and the other at the back.
According to the information forwarded Dell's Tavis Butler, the owners of the Streak tablet will be able to download apps from the Android Marketplace; as well as access social networks like Facebook, thanks to some of the software that Dell has developed for the device.
Describing Streak as a "data device first and a voice device second", Butler revealed that the tablet is the first device which has been manufactured by Dell's new business division that essentially focuses on small-screen devices.
Further adding that the Streak is a "companion" or "consolidation device", Butler said: "It reduces the need to take five or six different gadgets."
