Yahoo acquires Indonesian mobile Internet company - Koprol

Yahoo acquires Indonesian mobile Internet company - KoprolIn a Tuesday announcement, Yahoo revealed that it has acquired Koprol. com - a small Indonesian mobile location-based-services Web company, which is quite similar to the widely-known US geo-location-services company Foursquare.

While Yahoo has refrained from disclosing the financial terms of the Koprol acquisition, reports say that Yahoo was also seeking pursuing a $100-million deal for Foursquare, which is based in New York City.

The purchase of Koprol will give Yahoo an expert in location-based mobile services, which basically include - helping mobile users find nearby local businesses; and allowing them to see the location of their friends at any given time.

Revealing that the purchase of Koprol largely results from the increasing use of mobile devices for accessing the Internet, Yahoo also said that it intends introducing Koprol in new markets in the future.

In a statement, Rose Tsou, Yahoo's Senior VP of the Asia Region, said: "Koprol was uniquely designed for mobile phones and within a year has already built a strong user base. Yahoo! provides the global scale and technology to accelerate growth in Indonesia as well as introduce the service to new markets."

Meanwhile, noting that the decision to join Yahoo was an easy one and will "take Koprol to the next level," the Indonesian company said on its blog, that it is well suited for Indonesia; it can also be expanded to the emerging markets in general.
