With the XO-1 laptop practically being the springboard to success for the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) foundation, the non-profit is reportedly working on a $100-priced tablet, presently called XO-3, for children – a project which the foundation would likely debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2011.
According to a Thursday announcement by Marvell Technologies, the company intends partnering with OLPC for the proposed XO-3 tablet, and creating the hardware for the device.
While some indistinct details about the XO-3 tablet had started making rounds in December last year, more concrete specifications of the device are now being reported. The device will supposedly require merely 1 watt per hour, which is far lower than the OLPC laptop’s requirement of 5 watts per hour.
In addition, some of the other notable features of the XO-3 include - a multilingual, multitouch-screen keyboard with haptic feedback; high-performance 3D graphics; Flash 10 Internet; Wi-Fi; high-quality video (1080p full-HD encode and decode); and two-way teleconferencing. Equipped with a nARM processor, the tablet will initially run a version of the Google Android OS.
As per the information forwarded by the OLPC founder Nicholas Negroponte, though the initial models of the XO-3 will feature a glass screen, the tablet will eventually boast an adaptable screen, which the users can optimize for indoor viewing as well as direct sunlight.
