Missouri third grader wins this year’s “Doodle 4 Google” contest

googleAccording to a Wednesday announcement by Internet search giant Google, the company’s annual “Doodle 4 Google” competition has been won by a Makenzie Melton, who is a third grade student from R-2 Schools, El Dorado Springs, Missouri.

For the winning doodle, which will be displayed on the Google homepage, Makenzie will not only receive a $15,000 college scholarship for herself, but also a $25,000 technology grant for her school.

Elaborating that this year’s “Doodle 4 Google” contest, which was the third annual contest held by the company, was aimed at encouraging the children to push the limits, dreaming big, and visualize what they can accomplish in life, Google said that the theme of the contest was “If I Could Do Anything, I Would ... .” The contest was open to children in grades K through 12.

Makenzie’s entry, which competed with 33000 other submissions, had the rainforest habitat as the theme. Saying that she would like to save the endangered animals in the rainforest, Makenzie added: “I chose this doodle because the rainforest is in danger and it is not fair to the plants and animals. I love everything except spiders and snakes, but I would still save them.”

The winning doodle by Makenzie, along with 39 other finalists, will be showcased from May 27 to August 15, 2010, in a national exhibit the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York City.
