With the Wednesday announcement of the new-and-improved privacy changes by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the contentious ‘Instant Personalization’ feature – which is turned on by default – can now be turned off completely with one click.
In addition to introducing the one-click opt out of Instant Personalization, the new changes also focus largely on a grid which shows three kinds of people - Everyone, Friends of Friends, and Friends Only – as well as types of information users store on Facebook.
The process of changing privacy settings, so as to ensure ‘who sees what’, users need to choose an appropriate tab under current settings option, and then click ‘Apply These Settings,’ or select ‘Customize settings.’
As is apparent logically, if users choose the ‘Everyone’ tab, their personal information can be seen by everyone; and if ‘Friends Only’ is selected, then only the users’ friends can view the personal data. However, if ‘Friends of Friends’ is selected, only some items – like the users’ status, relationships, and photos - are visible to friends of friends.
The new changes, however, make no mention of the sharing of information with third-party sites, which provide most of the apps.
Nonetheless, Facebook claims that the changes have made the site’s privacy controls have been made simpler to find and set. Acoording to a statement by Zuckerberg: “We believe in privacy. We believe in giving people control.”
