The much-awaited 3G Skype calling capability will soon hit the Apple iPhone, with Skype having recently released a new version, Skype version 2.0, of its application for the popular Apple handset.
According to Skype, the new version of the iPhone app will allow iPhone users to make outbound Skype calls using their 3G connections – thereby widening the expanse of Skype calls from the thus-far restricted Wi-Fi-only calling
- from the exclusive iPhone carrier, AT&T.
Though the Skype 2.0 version for the iPhone-specific app will initially be free, the app will later entail a “small monthly fee” for Skype-to-Skype calls after August this year.
Once the fee for 3G Skype calling becomes effective, the service will require the users to pay an undisclosed monthly fee for availing the facility to initiate the service on their iPhones and call out to other Skype users.
As such, the service will not necessitate the purchase of “a chunk of minutes,” which the iPhone users have to currently go in for, in order to avail Skype-to-landline or Skype-to-mobile calling services.
The supposedly “small monthly fee” will have to be paid by the iPhone users over and above the fees or prices they presently pay as part of their different calling plans with AT&T.
