New Nuclear Plants will be More Radioactive and Harmful, states Report

nuclearIt has been cited in a report release today that the recent generation of proposed multi-billion dollar Canadian nuclear plants will probably be 158 times more hazardous than the earlier one.

This will in turn cost overruns and will also force taxpayers to “pick up the tab”, stated the report.

The report, The Hazards of Generation III Reactor Fuel Wastes, says the risk is primarily due to uncertainty about what will happen to radioactive uranium fuel after it is used.

This report was prepared by an independent consulting firm, Radioactive Waste Management Associates. It highlighted that Canada's present generation of nuclear plants has been sketched without any plans of managing the radioactive wastes that it would produce.

The report clearly said that Canada is going to repeat its mistake.

The firm is basically from New York-based and was created in 1989. The firm is quite reliable it has expert scientists and engineers who have been directing local governments in North America on the issue of waste management.

Authors of the report were Marvin Resnikoff, Jackie Travers, and Ekaterina Alexandrova and it was sponsored by Greenpeace Canada.

The report warns, that the waste that next generation plants would release, will have uranium fuel and will be two to 158 times more radioactive than waste that existing Canadian reactors produce as it uses natural uranium fuel.
