Apple achieves 2 million iPad sales mark; on track for 8 million in 2010

Apple achieves 2 million iPad sales mark; on track for 8 million in 2010Close on the heels of its Friday, May 28, launch of the iPad tablet computer in Europe, Canada, Australia, and Japan, Apple Monday announced that the sales of the device have crossed the enviable two million mark!

The two-million unit sales achievement of the April-launched iPad is notably higher than the estimates made by the Wall Street analysts earlier this year. After the unveiling of the iPad by Apple CEO Steve Jobs in January, analysts said that they expected the device to sell between 175,000 and 778,000 units per month.

Saying that it expects the sales of the iPad to further grow by leaps and bounds – likely to reach almost eight million units for the year -, Apple also revealed on Monday that it intends launching the device in nine more countries in July; followed by a few more later this year.

Meanwhile, BroadPoint AmTech’s Brian Marshall, who, in January, projected over 6.2 million iPad sales in 2010, has raised his estimates to seven million units; while industry research firms like Gartner have expect the number to be nearly eight million.

Commenting on the noticeably brisk sales of the iPad, Jobs said: “Customers around the world are experiencing the magic of iPad, and seem to be loving it as much as we do. We appreciate their patience, and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone.”
